'Ikan Bilis' is the malay name for Anchovies!  Most of you may be familiar with the tamil word 'nethli meen' or 'nethli karuvaadu'!!..........
This is one of my favourite malaysian dishes that I have learnt to cook after comin to Malaysia. A very easy dish that can be prepared in minutes with minimum effort.
The rice is filled with the flavours of coconut and pandan / screwpine leaves. Quite a heavy dish..........but its one dish which might come under your list of "favourites"........'Sambal is a malay word which is more or less like our indian chutneys or thogayals!!
Im just posting the recipe of the ikan bilis sambal today! Look out for the nasi lemak rice recipe in my next post!

2 tbsps oil
1/2 small onion, cut into cubes
1 medium onion + 2 pods garlic, blend
2-3 tbsp chilli paste
1 tbsp, tomato puree
3 tbsp ikan bilis, washed and cleaned
1 small piece tamerind dissolved in 1/4 glass water. strain
1/4 tsp sugar

  • In a saucepan, add oil and saute the onions.
  • Add the onion and garlic paste and saute further.
  • Add the chilli paste and tomato puree and stir till the raw smell goes.
  • Add the washed ikan bilis and stir.
  • Add the strained tamerind juice.
  • add the sugar and adjust the salt.
  • cook till the water disappears.

  • Serve with fried ikan bilis, peanuts and fried egg.
  • I make my own chilli paste with dried red chillies. take a 1 cup of these chillies and soak them in boiling water for awhile. Then, cook them on the stove with the water till they become soft. Blend the chillies with a little water till it forms a paste. Freeze the rest.
